    Help me find a college!!!

I don't know if I've mentioned it on here before, but my boyfriend (of a couple years) is in the Navy and it look slike he'll be moving. I'm pretty sure I'm going with him, so I have to find a college to transfer to. I will have gotten my AA, so I'm just interested in the college of ed. at the school. I will probably be moving to Connecticut (Groton, I think it's in the south of the state), although I might be able to go to a school in Rhode Island. I'm a Special Ed major with hopes to become an elementary gifted teacher. And suggestions? I'm from Florida, so I have no idea what it's like up there! Someone told me that Connecticut's a great place for Gifted programs, but not so in RI. Any advice and general knowledge would be much appreciated. Thanks!

I don't know how credentialing works out of my own state, so I can't really help you there; but good luck, Kellie!
In my state, you finish your B.A. before you start your education program. The state offers a special ed credential, but it doesn't include the gifted; they aren't considered special ed here in CA. I earned an additional certificate in gifted ed from UCSD. My certificate doesn't mean much; nothing on the pay scale, and my administrator can choose to send the gifted students my way, or not. It does put my on the district GATE committee, and I do get to do inservice to others on how to serve their gifted students.

Thanks, Kelley. (My name's Kellie and it's so hard to type it when it's spelled differently!!!) Most states have you major in whatever (including Special Ed. which is what I'm doing) then we also get a gifted certificate after getting a 4 year degree. We just have to take some extra classes or training or something. Basically I'm looking for some info on what schools in the area have good education programs and how Special Ed & Gifted are treated in those states. For instance, we all know that the educational system here in the South isn't quite amazing, but if someone wanted to be an Education major in Florida, I'd reccommend UNF cause it's got a great school of Ed. I'm just really nervous about transferring schools and moving!

Hmmmm ... it seems to me that until you know where you're going, there's no point in checking out colleges. Once you've moved, I'd visit the human resource office of a local school district. Tell them about your interests and see what they recommend. Given the fact that these people would be involved in the field of education - they could probably give you some really good advice regarding local universities or colleges.

In the meanwhile, here is a link to the Connecticut Department of Education. This site has information about certification along with education programs available within the state.

    Best wishes,

    David

Whoops - just noticed that I didn't provide the link. Sorry.
