I can sense a little apprehension creeping into my psyche

Mr. Miyagi, one of my all time favorite movie characters once told his protege...."Danielson" that it was okay to lose a karate match to his opponent but that he should never "lose to fear." ops:

The tiny, cold, fingers of anxiety have begun to grip my middle, as I have been to four job fairs, been to my school system transfer fair, sent out numerous faxes, snail mails, and e mails and have yet to have much to show for it. The silence is most alarming.

The only thing I fear more than being unemployed is having to return to my current school for another year. I would rather drink draino!

If you truly don't fear being unemployed, then your second fear is quite groundless....hold fast!

Billybob, I feel your pain. I won't hijack your thread, but similar experiences abound.

As you (and others) might have guessed, that comment of mine is pure brevado. 8)

Unemployment, at this point in my career and my life, is just not an option.; it clarifies my determination to extricate myself from my current situation, though, I think.

Today was our first actual day of testing. They hit the door screaming and shrieking and carooming off the walls this morning and it took an act of providence to get them to settle down enough to give testing instructions. Things went incredibly well, after that, amazingly. But once testing is over, we all fear it's going to go "south" real fast.

We're all hoping that administration will just send the worst of them home for the remainder of the year, but since those are usually the ones who bomb the end of grade test and will need remediation in order to try again (this is a gateway year and they MUST pass to go on to high school), we'll have to keep them around enough to permit that. Worst part is that most will not pass anyhow and will only serve to make everyone else miserable. Sad, but too many attend school solely because it is free day care.

Situations like this one make me question the wisdom of compulsory education. I know that sounds elitist and cynical, but I am neither of those things - no, I, like many others at my school are just weary and worn out (like most of us this time of year) from working in a "train wreck" of a school that's mired in a quagmire of low expectations and dubious leadership.

I fear I have begun to forget what it felt like to be happy in my work.

I feel so sad for you. I think the ones who truly are good teachers go through what you are feeling. I think the profession (and I do believe it's a profession as well as a calling) loses a lot of good teachers for the same stuff you're going through.
My thoughts are with you in whatever you choose to do.
