I've sent the office staff in a tizzy

A year or so ago I noticed this-mentioned it and forgot about following up on it. After a personal finance course this summer I have a renewed interest in pursueing it. Our secretaries keep a binder on our front counter in the office- where everyone signs in and waits for the pricipals, students etc. It is for sub sign in. They sign in mext to the teachers name they are subbing for. Under an obvious piece of removable tape are everyones SSN# . When I mentioned it the first time they took it down for a little bit but later put it back. I mean I know it is not convenient for the secretaries but I don't want my ssn out there for everyone to see. Some of our parents are getting out of prision, going into prision, drug dealers,Heck some of the kids too!

Today I went in and they were making snide comments about who was peeking in the drawer they have now put it into until the principal finds something to do with it. It took all week for them to do that much.

Our county alos requires a ssn on signins for training. They stopped for a while and have now gone back b/c it caused too much work for the sec. loggging the info. I refused this year- let them look it up.

    Anyone else have these problems?

Bugs me too. Our district stopped making us use or SSN a few years ago for stuff, and our insurance had to legally stop using our SSN as an ID number last year.

I guess people don't understand what can be gotten with your SSN. Your whole life is available to anyone with your SSN.

Anyone of you should know by now that your first rule at work is to make sure you DON'T cause work for anyone else! That's what this really boils down to (and I agree with you).

As a victm of identitity theft (TWICE!!!), I flatly refuse to put my SS# on any document that others could see. (Not that it matters any more - seems like half the country already knows it )

Just let one of your secretaries have to go through a year as a fraud victim because someone is using their # to open accounts all over the country & the snide comments will stop PDQ. And four years after the first theft, when they're STILL getting collection notices from companies that they never opened accounts with, they'll become quite the SS#-privacy advocate.

    Trust me, I know.

We used student SS#s as their ID #s until a few years ago. I was extremely relieved when the district started to assign local numbers for them. They were always losing shedules, cafeteria cards, etc that had their number on them, big as Dallas.

They were making comments like "Hey, you're not looking at those SSN are you?" and snickering. I don't know if they realize that it is not THEM specifically that may steal them. The kids, parents, vendors, visitors, and staff have access and the only person that needs that book is the sub. I think having it put u, watching them sign and putting it away is a great idea. We only have 1-2 a day anyway. If they say anything else I will say something. I don't know if they realize it was me that complained.
