Jump ropes...harder to find than the Holy Grail!

I have looked and looked, and, other than online sites and the like, I cannot find double dutch jump ropes anywhere! Can anyone recommend a chain, or failing that, a local store in Austin, Texas, that would carry them? I have tried Wal-Mart, Target, Academy, and Toys R' Us. None of them had them, and they all told me that they never carry them.

If I were using my own money, I would just order some online, but it's the school's money, and my boss (believe it or not) doesn't trust online order sites. Any ideas? I don't need a whole lot, just two or three for my fifth-graders at recess.

I used to be able to find jump ropes at Toys R Us, but they were too light weight to be good. Perhaps a sporting goods store? Lots of people use them for cardio workouts.

Another idea, ask the PE teacher, they probably have a catalog you may order from, the principal should like that!

Check in the sporting goods section at a store where exercise equipment and supplies are sold. Some models have adjustable lengths where you can cut to meet your needs.

Last double dutch rope I saw was a long piece of rope that one of the girls-on a professional double dutch team-bought at a Home Depot. She said there was no reason to use anything else else.

Wow those girls were good. This was many years ago but I don't think the premise has changed. Have you thought about a long heavy rope?

You could always do it on the cheap. Make them yourself using clothesline.

Are the double dutch ropes different to normal ropes?

We just used normal skipping ropes but two of them.
I sucked at skipping. I would always trip over the ropes and skin my knees! aah good time of being a kid! hee he

Here are some links to something we did at primary school. Jump Rope For Heart. The NZ Heart Foundation held a telethon and then used the money raised to buy skipping ropes for all NZ schools. All different lengths. Then we had this day where EVERYONE went out onto the netball courts and all skipped together and raised even more money for heart research. Very clever marketing whoever thought of it...
That was back in the 80's when it had just come out. It was interesting researching it.
Maybe the american heart foundation will donate ropes to your school?
