    Kind of a vent

This afternoon I made the list of schools I will call tomorrow to ask if they happen to have an empty position or need a sub.
Then I called one of the teachers in my previous school to see if she needs a sub (she has a child that is often sick so sometimes she takes sick leave). She told me some news about availability of teacher jobs in future, and they are were very bad.
Basically, one third of all already working teachers will be sacked and the rest redistributed among the schools. 8O Principals are forbidden to employ any new teachers. (by Ministry of Education, so this is serious)
As I don't have a teaching position now, it means I will not have one until the next education reform, which may be in 10 years?. So I guess I will now go and reread Victoria's suggestions for non-teaching jobs from my last vent... :?

Well that news sure poops

I am sorry to hear that -- I do know how discouraging that kind of news is. I also know that even believing that things will work out okay in the end doesn't make the situation easy to deal with in the present.

I do hope you will find something soon so you can stop worrying  (I say this is a world-class champion worrier.)

    Damn, Zhel...what a mess.

Is there no chance of reform before the next 10 years? And what of attrition? I mean, I know you don't want to wait around for someone to die, but surely there will be retirements and *other* vacancies?

And you don't fancy emmigrating either, I suppose? I'm sure you could get any number of jobs, many other places in the world....

I hope it works out for you

I hope you get a job soon. Somehow it doesn't seem right that there will be no new hiring in 10 years. I admire you for looking into other options :-) There are all kinds of jobs that are bgetter if you're a teacher

Hi, friends, thank you for your kind words.
It seems that situation is not THAT bad; actually it is about as bad as it was before 8O
I called several schools today and they said that they don't need anyone right now. As expected; OK.
I called the principal of my HS (when I was a student) and she explained the situation to me: they are supposed to fill all the empty spots by redistributing people who are left without jobs due to running reform. Actually, a teacher just retired from their school and they redistributed someone to that spot from another school. BUT she says that it was the only available teacher; there aren't many to be redistributed; so if there are retirement/death openings in near future, the competition will be about the same as last month.
I called few more schools and actually had an interview in one! 8O Their teacher was redistributed to some completely fourth school (due to her own wish and seniority). They did not take me (as expected; OK; at least I took a nice walk in snow-covered city at -15 degrees Celsius  *), but it is a sign that things are not MORE difficult. One day a principal in some school will be dizzy and take me
*it's easier for me when I know immediately that I wasn't taken, before I start identifying with the school.

Now about the 10 years: During every educational reform, new textbooks are issued. 8th grade books first issued in 1987 were replaced in 2002. 10th grade books first issued in 1990 were replaced in 2004. 6th grade book is still basically the same, except for minor adjustments about viruses and microscopes. The books get little tweaked each year when a new batch comes out of the printing press, but they still follow the same standards of that particular reform. So: if for example they decide this year that 7th graders will only do mammals all year in biology, it is likely to stick for about a decade.
(they say that in February the changes to present curriculum will be known so publishers will be able to make new textbooks for next school year... they say 30 percent of subject material will be eliminated from each grade... we'll see what will remain):

Check out your local community college. That's what I did after I resigned (in a huff) and slammed the door behind me.

It's awesome. AWESOME. Even if you are an adjunct, it's a great way to use your skills and be appreciated for it.
