    Latest heat bill

I'm pinching myself to make sure the heat bill is right. Two months ago my heat bill was $146 (estimated bill). Last month was a real bill...$30.00. I got my latest bill today...$68.00. WOW!!! I guess keeping the house at 62 degrees is beginning to pay off. I'm also pretty comfortable now at 62 degrees. Funny what we can adjust to when we need to.
I haven't had to turn on the space heater for 3 days now. My son has had his on in the basement because he's not feeling well, so that may be helping some. Now I just need to see what the electric bill is. Last month it was about $75.00, still not bad.

We got our bill on Christmas Eve. . . $205. That was an actual reading. The thing is that we keep our house at 64 in the daytime and 62 at night. We also have a gas stove and gas dryer, but in the months when those are the ONLY things we have using gas, our bill is always flat rate, which is $13.00.

We're hoping for a warm up!

A few years ago we had HUGE bills all winter. When April came, we had a big credit on our bill and didn't have a bill at all until November! We never got any reason, either. Nothing said "estimated" or anything.

Heat pump/central air+good roof= reasonable electric bills. We keep a kerosene heater in case the power croaks. My electric bills hover about $100, give or take, and we generally keep it about 70.

What is your sq. footage? I would love to know that's all my bill was. My gas bill was 79? on monthly thing and $195 on electricity. We had to go for over a month with no insulation on 1/2 of our house b/c of the storm and they were building back the attic & roof.

    heat pump

When we built our house, we put in electric heat/central air. It was the best thing we ever did! We've never had an electric bill over about $210 on a 1700 sq ft house. That's in the summer, when ComEd charges a higher rate. We keep our house at about 72-74 in the winter and around 76-78 in the summer. I love the even heat that the heat pump provides. We do keep our fan running 100% of the time, so that the heat circulates through the house. It keeps the heat pump from running as much. Karen

    My Funny "Utility" Story

This is not seasonal but, it's typically funny. We have live "backwards" in the size of houses - started rather large and worked our way down to about 1200 feet which is perfect now.
Anyway, our water bill is usually about $30 until a couple of months ago when I got shocked by a $145 bill. I called them and reported that I had not built a lake or pool as there wasn't room. I got the usual run-a-round about possible leaks, etc. I said, "Lady, do the math. That would be almost 200,000 gallons.
    NOT POSSIBLE!
They sent someone out to check and, guess what - no leak. They called back later and said that they would average it out over 6 months so I only needed to send $45.
I grumbled but accepted the offer thinking they must need the money for something. Then I got the real surprize when my next bill came with a $40 CREDIT!.... shesh.... Oh, well.... our government at work....

My house is 1700 square feet, which does include a finished basement. I do keep the bedroom and bathroom doors closed and have closed the french doors leading into the diningroom/livingroom area (aka "the arctic circle). I went as far as hanging a thick curtain over the french doors to block the cold draft from that room. It's the old garage that the previous owner turned into usable living space...in warm weather.
We had several below zero nights and barely above zero days, so I am happy with the $68 gas bill.

    I just don't get this.
We pay 250$ a month just for electrisity.
And I do not have a HUGE house !
What makes this price hard to understand is :
We have all the power we need - - water turbine powerplants - windmills, (NO nuclear plants )
Norway produces more power than we need. SO what do the owners do ? They sell most of the cheap power to Germany and Sweden - turn up the prices and make us buy very expensive imported electr. from Sweden -

The power companies thus are extremely wealthy - the consumers are ripped off.
So much for the wealthy nation of the Norwegians !
    Halleluja for rogernomic-leftovers !

In past years we have had an electric bill of around $60 at the low and topping out in Feb and again in Aug at about $110. (Heat pump and wood stove)

We are already at $110 in November- Its going to be a long winter.

Our youngest son kept turning up the heat over the holidays to make sure that his sweetie was comfortable. He'd turn it up, Ron would turn it down. He'd turn it up, I'd threaten to kill him. He'd turn it up again. My mistake. I didn't really kill him.

I'll let you know when the gas bill gets here.
