I had a student in one of my classes that was like this. He did very well but was a non-reader.... he made straight A's because he has compesated his lack o reading with great listening skills....... hope this helps
I am a tenth grade English teacher and I have this student in my class who never participates. She sits in the back and is always really quiet, she never knows the answer when I call on her, and I do not know what to do. She gets good grades, but has very poor reading and vocabulary skills. It seems like her vocabulary level does not meet her intelligence at all. When I call on her to read she reads so slowly, pronounces words wrong, and has no clue what the heck she's reading. It looks like she pays attention, but it seems like she never understands what I am saying. Could this be a sign of a learning disability, her parents don't seem to be worried because she gets good grades, and I just dont know what to do. I would greatly appreciate any advice!! Thank you.

Does this student's cumulative file show any evidence of testing or receiving services? Has your building's SAP, TAT or whatever you call your committee met to discuss this girl's problems and see what teachers can do to bring about some solutions to the problems?

I'm confused. How can a student lacking in reading and writing skills, and who doesn't participate in class, achieve good grades in English? Shouldn't her marks reflect her functioning level?
How does this student perform on written essays done in class as opposed to essays, book reports, or other written assignments done at home?
Is the work done in class consistent in quality with the work done at home?
Is it possilbe that someone off campus is doing the bulk of her work for her under the guise of helping?
How does she interact with other students? Does she seem to have friends or is she a loner? Is it possible that her hesitation in class comes from extreme shyness due to a reclusive and introspective personality?
