Me and my computer questions again

Ok, so I reformatted my computer.
    I installed Windows.
    I've installed the drivers etc.
I can't get my High speed internet tocome on.

My problem seems to be I don't have the drivers. now my problem is they aren't on my driver cds I got from Gateway. Since my first reformat I went to High Speed, A guy came into my house fiddled around a little, I think installed a card and left. Didn't say 2 words about what he was doing. So now I can't get on line. I call the internet provider ..ater being on hold for an hour. and he pretty much tells me the only way to get the drivers is to open up my modem, pull out the card, go to another computer , download the drivers and install them. Well I tell him...you all have this on file..you put the thing in..pull it up on your computer. he says all this crap about it could have been a contracter..I'd have to go to my local cable company, find out if it was a contractor, contact him, see if he still has the records... on and on and on.....
He said the only other option is to go out and buy a new network card...I told him No, you put this thing in here it works why should I buy a new one? He says well we only warrenty it for 30 days.. i told him I didn't want it replaced I just want a copy of the drivers!

Is there ANY other way to do this????

Mine isn't on there... The modem box says WebStar..which when I look online says 4D something..but neither is on that list... Any other idea?
I openedup the computer and I see the card but I can't read it and I'm afraid to yank it out and look at the card name. i tried drivers that I thought might work from Zoom but it didn't work.

My suggestion as to the easiest/cheapest way to fix this is to go buy a new network card. It will cost you about $25 and already come with the drivers. Just MHO. Best of luck to you.

But do I havve to install this card in my computer modem? Or will I have to pay someone more money to do that... My argument is that it should be the Internet providers responsibiolity since THEY installed the hardware on my computer in the first place..shouldn't THEY have to supply me with the drivers?

Typically, if you paid for them to come and install "high speed/broadband" and they installed a network card - you paid for that and they should have left you a "back up disk" with the drivers on it. If they didn't do that... I suppose they may have some liability but proving all that and actually getting them to do it might be rough. Yes, if you purchase a new network card, you'd have to install it yourself but it is really easy. Especially if you are only taking the old one out and putting the new one in. Best of luck to you. I hope you get it worked out!

I agree with Valerie. The ISP should want to make sure you can get online and thus provide the service you need for no additional cost to you. I don't know if you are talking about cable, dsl or phone line. If it's a regular phone modem I would think they would still service it since they installed it. You may need to climb the ladder of customer service until someone understands that you want your money back unless it's working right.

Maybe this is a silly question, but it may be that Win98 doesn't support a high speed connection? I know it wouldn't support stereo netphone connections.
I'm assuming you've already gone to your system hardware configuration to see what the problem is. If you haven't do so. My guess is that you need to go to Microsoft and try and figure out if your modem is supported- you should be able to download the drivers directly from the manufacturer just locate their site and go to tech support then find the drivers for your model of modem.
The easiest thing in my mind would probably be to upgrade to WinXP which would have the drivers. Perhaps your school has a site license and then you can use their authorization code. I finally upgraded partially because some of my old hardware wasn't supported and because I hated the constant crashes I got.

Well when I got the computer orginally from Gateway it hooked up to phone line internet. Then it crashed and I set it up again and it worked with phone line internet. Then I had High Speed cable internet installed (when the guy installed the card) and now it has crashed...so I am assuming if the drivers aren't on anything I have then theuu must be with the cable company ..right? It did not support high speed until the cable guy fixed it.
