    My proposal got funded!

Several weeks ago on this site, I asked for help in how to write a proposal. Many thanks to Bananas, Lucy and others who gave me links, info and pointed me in the right direction for writing a proposal (which I'd never done before). My proposal got funded! And I have even already received what I wanted! Yay!

My reading lab now has about $3,000 worth of MUCH needed supplies! I was able to complete my Soar to Success reading intervention sets to use with my third to fifth graders, and able to purchase a WRMT-R (Woodcock Johnson Reading Mastery Test-Revised) in order to be able to assess my students at the beginning and end of the year (and test other students at teachers' requests).

Our county does not have a lot of money - low tax base - and many/most adults are blue collar and don't put a priority on education. Too, our Bd. of Ed. doesn't seem to place any emphasis (real emphasis, as in BOOKS) on literacy (but mouths the right things). So now if we could just get some big beautiful picture books in our library and classrooms, and get more BOOKS in our library and classrooms. Like, up to date books. Believe it or not, the average date of our county's books in our libraries is (hold your breath and it's NOT a typo) 1971. Can you believe that?!? My third graders were trying to do some research on animals and our library had about 25 books on animals, all old, and some held together with duct tape. Crazy.

Anyway, I am SO thrilled about completing my intervention book sets for my kids, and getting a standardized assessment method! Yay!

You should have seen those kids when the books were delivered - they tore into that box like it was gold.

Congratulations! That's quite an exciting bit of news, and so very worthwhile! You have every right to be excited and proud. What an asset you are to your school and the kids in your school.

So when's the next proposal going out?

Thanks, guys! Bitsy, I already had in mind what my reading lab desperately needs before I wrote the proposal - needed to complete my intervention book sets and get an assessment tool (other than IRI's which we have but are very subjective, really). So no shopping spree for me . . . however . . . . I am considering how to write another proposal for some big beautiful picture books - so funny you should mention that, Linda!

I figured you did kds Most proposals I've seen have been pretty specific. Still more fun to spend it than to wish you had it to spend! Good job!

    low tax base
The state prefers the PC term "low wealth"......

Sounds familiar.....wonder if you guys have great ballfields and gyms? Anyway, glad to hear you succeeded! Good Job!

Well, the Board did fund a new weight room for the high school, and resurfacing of the high school tennis courts. Priorities, eh? Just read in the paper that we are a Level 3 county. "Level" is not the right word and I've thrown the paper out, but the idea is that NC has 5 levels of wealth and all the counties are ranked based on a scale of 1-5, 5 being the highest (Chapel Hill, no doubt). Anyway, if we are a 3, I'd hate to live in a 1 or 2. But then again, it makes a difference WHAT you do with the money you DO have. If priorities are not literacy but sports (even though we are a rinky dink town), then that is what the prevailing atmosphere will be. And they wonder why we have such a huge drop out rate in high school.
