    Oh the germs!

Teachers are more exposed to germs than anyone else.

Why is that? Is it because of our constant interaction with the masses? Is it because some schools lack the motivation to promote a sanitary environment? Is it due to the stress of the job?

My sinuses have lost their minds. My voice is begging for silence. My head is full of information, to-do lists, lesson plans, and the shoes that are on sale at the mall. (Oh, they are gorgeous!)

The body begs for cotton sheets and thick pillows. I'm about to grant its wish.

Does anyone else feel like teaching is giving their immune system a run for its money?

I actually feel like my immune system is better than most. I credit this to my constant exposure to the walking germs in combination with the vitamin cocktail I take every evening with my dinner. Without the vitamin supplements, I fall ill rather quickly.

I also suffer from food allergies that are very severe. Fortunately, it's only to two types of tree nuts (so far) and I can usually avoid exposure. Occasionally, I will get accidentally exposed. Once recovering from the anaphylactic shock, my immune system is weak for about 5 to 7 days.

When I start feeling a little sniffly, I take extra vitamin C for a few days and can usually thwart whatever is attacking me.
I've heard that four out of every three people have trouble with fractions.

I think for me, it's because I work with small children who want to hold my hand. When I get that tickly feeling in my throat, I put two drops of oregano oil under my tongue (it's vile) and it seems to help. I also use a lot of echinacea and vit C when I start feeling poorly.

I like the cotton sheets and soft pillows. Do they come with an excellent novel too?
If you can't be kind, at least be vague.

I've missed 1 day from work for illness in the last 10 years. There have been days when I probably would have done better to stay home, but I generally just hang in there.

Is it because of our constant interaction with the masses? Is it because some schools lack the motivation to promote a sanitary environment? Is it due to the stress of the job?
I'd vote for all of the above.

Yes we are exposed to more germs than the normal human being. However, if that 1st year teacher can make it through the 1st year, then his/her immune system is stronger than most. I do keep a pump bottle of hand sanitizer within reach at all times. At least it makes me feel better.

I think it takes a period of adjustment to combat the constant sickness, but once you're over it, your body adjusts and it is relatively smooth sailing from there. Kids aren't very mindful of germs - if at all - so it's no wonder school is a breeding zone.

I agree that being around all these kids makes our immune systems stronger. Sure I get sick and I blame the kids. I have a brother who gets sick more often then I do and he works in a factory. I make sure that I use hand sanitizer often and I wash my hands often too.

One teacher in our hall sprayed his classroom with disinfectant every day after school for years. He swore that it kept the germs down in there. In looking back, I think it did help. He was out less than other teachers, and whatever was going around didn't hit him as much as it did others. He was religious about the spraying.

Kids spread germs; there's no way around it. I was sick the most during my first year, but since then I've been pretty healthy and haven't had to take too many days.
