is this a philosophy of education?

I don't now why but the question of what my philosophy of teaching is has always baffled me. Here is my newest one, whatcha think?

My classroom will be a safe place for students to share and discuss thoughts and ideas. I believe that every child can learn and it is my job to guide student learning. I will make my classroom a place where exploration and discovery is not only possible, but expected. Students will be encouraged to ask questions and have open, thought provoking discussions. I will teach my children subject matter, and in the process, they will learn responsibility, pride, and courtesy. The children of today are our future, we as teachers must prepare our students not only for higher education, but for the life that is ahead of them.

If it is, what do you think (constructive critisim)? If it's not, why isnt it?

Thank you for the reply Tom.

It is strange that this has gotten 30 something views and 1 response... must mean no one is quite sure what makes a philosophy of education.

I went with basically what I wrote above. I hope I get the chance to interview for what I think may be my dream job!

It sounds like our mission statement....

Safe place, for sure.....too much verbal bullying going on, we need
    to all do better.

I agree they can all learn but some just aint gonna pass the new standards.........Im glad you have time for exploration and discovery in this era of FCAT FCAT FCAT 24/7.........
Responsibility............if you have just taught that one thing YOU HAVE done a great job.......

My philosophy is different in that I am PE........
I try and expose children to as many different physical activities as possible in hope that they may find one or more they enjoy and can excel
at...........I also concentrate on being NICE to others and helpful........
The more we get along the more fun we have and the more chances we can take............

Actually that sounds more like a mission statement than a philosophy of education. Mission statements are short like that. Philosophy of education is actually a real paper and should be 2-5 pages long and should address instruction, assessment, etc.

A mission statement is short and explains what you will do to achieve the kind of learning you want in your classroom.

Mission statement is "action" oriented and philosophy of education is "theory" oriented.

    Hope that helps

Thank you Leslie and gatorp, all input is appreciated.

The directions on the application state; in your own handwriting, briefly describe your general philosophy of education. The application gives you about 5” of space to write in.

Hmm.....I looked, didn't reply, and now I've finally made up my mind- It sounds more like a mission statement. Not that I would think that's a bad thing. This sort of thing garners a lot of respect in administrative quarters.
