    Returning after an extended leave-suggestions?

I'm going back to my music classroom (half-time) after an 8 week medical leave March 4, and I'm not sure exactly how to get my classes back into the swing of things and deal with the issues which will almost inevitably come up. There has been one substitute for most of the leave (it took about a week to get a long-term) who has been good by teacher reports (or, at least, no one has told me of any disasters). I expect quite a bit of testing, and frankly, I don't know that I'm physically up to dealing with too much at this time. We're one month from state testing, so the stress level in the school as a whole will be high, and administrative support will likely be low due to the various district meetings and similar things which take the administrators out of the school.

Does anyone have any suggestions on activities, classroom management, or just general transitions which will help, especially for the 5th and 6th graders? (I'll have just 2 kinder classes, 2 1sts, but 8 5th and 6th)

What about singing patriotic songs? The We Sing series has a nice collection of patriotic songs ... and after the events of 9/11, patriotism is really "cool" with kids.

God Bless America, This Land is Your Land, and We Love the USA are some of the catchy songs on the "We Sing America" album. It also has "regional" songs like "Blow the Man Down," "Eerie Canal," "Cockles and Mussels" etc.

Since 5th grade studies American history - why not teach them some good old fashioned folksongs?

I hope it all goes well for you. I am a bit surprised you have decided to go back so quickly but I really hope it helps. Try and take it one day at a time. The kids will be sympathetic and will probably surprise you by making it easier than you think.

Is there anyway you can capitalize on the olympics or is it too late for that? Music certainly isn't my area of expertise, just know that we will be thinking of you.
