    Snow Day #1

We got out first snow day of the school year today. It's very rare for us to get a snow day before January. We sometimes get a few flurries here and there in November/December, but even that is rare.

This year we've had three instances of accumulation, but none have come during school time. Last night we got SNOW . . . four inches at our house. It was all-or-nothing for snowfall. The county to the west of us got NOTHING, and the county to the east of us got 6.5 inches. DH is away this week, and he's got no snow there either--almost 70 miles from here.

They called school off last night, which is also rare. Normally they cancel in the mornings. It was nice to sleep in for a change.

Here are a few photos I took from the house this morning.

    View from the front door.

    View from the back door.

View from the "way back" part of our yard.

I was thinking the same, although truth to tell, if it is over 6" and still falling at 4:30 am, they tend to close because of the buses.

When DH first moved here, he couldn't understand why we got out of school when there was just a dusting of snow or sometimes even NO snow at our house. Then I took him on a little road trip of some of the bus routes. 8O

I live in the flat part near the river, but the majority of the county is in the mountains . . . with the curvy roads that don't have guard rails. They're pretty scary.

When I lived in NC we did the same thing. I know that in the south the preparation for snow is not as extensive as in the north. Like Kdoh, we will close if it is snowing hard in the early morning with a prediction for lots more.

Most outside the South do not know how much of an understatement that is. Since snow doesn't occur through most of NC regularly, most municipalities might have a snowplow and a few bags of salt. They might even go unused for a couple of years. But when used, it doesn't last long.... It's just safer to stop a day or two- snowfall is not very persistent here, either.

    Wow, beautiful pictures!

We actually had a snow day earlier this week! First snow day for South Louisiana in... well it has to be over 30 years. It was maybe 2 inches and had melted by noon, lol, but we had the whole day off to build our one little pathetic snowman and throw a few snowballs.

What is this "snow" of which you speak? :P

All it takes for us to get out is ice on the roads or extensive flooding. My students (high school level) have never seen snow if they have not been out of San Antonio.

Last Monday, I actually hoped there would be enough ice (that would be any at all) for us to have the day off. No such luck.

    5 days to go...
I've heard that four out of every three people have trouble with fractions.

    LOL!

My almost 20 year old son had snow Wednesday @ A&M. The child has seen snow, but it was the first time he ever saw it actually falling. He said the whole campus was out and playing in it. [Never mind that they had finals ]

We might get an ice day next semester; it seems that they tend to happen in January or February most often. It's been a couple of years, hasn't it?
