So, I found a "friend" in my shower....

It's currently 6:48 AM - my alarm went off at 6:30 because my summer class starts tomorrow and I need to write a paper for it. I get out of bed, and throw open the shower curtain to turn on the water, and there is...something...on the shower floor. At first I think, how did a brown frog get into my shower? Upon closer inspection, I have a little brown bat in my shower.
I didn't know how to get him out of my house safely, so I come down to look on Google (and tell you all, 'cuz how strange is this?) So now I have to go find a little box and a piece of cardboard so that I can scoop him up and let him out. I don't want to hurt him or scare him into flying around the house.

    Wish me luck.... :?

Hope you got him out alright. I'm not real fond of the critters, as they are notoriously often rabid. I'd say go looking for a hole in the roof someplace.

He is out! But it took a while....

First, I got a plastic bowl and a thin magazine to get him out, but he did not like being "scooched" onto the magazine while trapped under the bowl...bats can make some weird noises!

So, then I got a pair of leather gloves and encouraged him from behind to get on the magazine, then put the bowl over him to bring him outside, all the while listening to him voice his displeasure with the whole situation.

Then I put him down outside and waited for him to fly. He decided to crawl. Cute, but funny. He seemed to making his way to the big tree about 50 feet away. He struggled through the grass for about 10 minutes and I put the gloves back on and brought him to the base of the tree where we parted ways. He was a really neat critter... I had never been that close to a bat before!

He never tried to fly, so I wonder if he was young...it's about that time of year. (But if he can't fly, how'd he get into the shower? Mysteries...) I am fairly sure that we have a bat colony in our roof eaves, but I think that's good, they eat 100 bugs an hour, each. I am just mystified as to how he got inside - the window screens are all intact, and the vent for the bathroom has 1/4" slits - way too small for the bat to get through.

Oh well, I cleaned up the shower (he was messy!) and then went to school to type my paper, so now I have to stop procrastinating and type!

Ewwww! You are brave! That is what sons and husbands are for!

I was surprised to read that you are required to write a paper before you start class! Are you the teacher or the student in this class?

I am a student - it's my last class for my Master's. This class was a bit weird. We met one night on June 1 for an hour to get handouts and then had readings and papers due every Friday. The class actually meets Aug 1-3, and 6-10. And then I am done! (and get the measly $1000 raise for having a master's....)

The class was Schools and Society - interesting but a LOT of reading and writing. I have two papers due tomorrow that I did finish, one next Wednesday and one next Friday. Then two weeks off (by off I mean my summe job!)and then teachers start the 27th and kids the 29th.

    Summer is going so fast...

Interesting way to do class; a lot of independent study from the sound of it. Congrats on your masters and completing your last class! I finished mine last Friday. Now I have the dreaded portfolio to work on. :?
