    A Teacher's First Year

    Salutations!

My name's Sam, and I'm a First-Year Student of Primary (or Elementary) Education, here in sunny Australia! And while I can't imagine myself in any other profession (unless my State newspaper needs another film critic - which it doesn't ) I'm not without misgivings.

What do you suppose are the biggest challenges new teachers face? Disrespect? Befuddling curriculum? Angry parents? Intimidation from the grizzled and grudge-bearing older teachers?

Can anyone tell me what to expect?

    Thanks.

The first two I think. Most of the time, older colleagues are actually helpful. The lunchroom ladies who mistake 1st year teachers for high school students can be a bit unpleasant though.

Heh-heh. There aren't many Cafeterias in Australian schools, fortunately for me.

Are there difficulties on top of the ones I've listed, but? I'd imagine it to be a very unnerving time. I'm unnerved already, and I won't be legally qualified for another three years.

I think probably you will find classroom managment/discipline issues to be the number one difficulty, followed by managing time and workload. While you have a chance, study these things carefully and look hard for practical, workmanlike solutions; the "head in the clouds" stuff you see a lot of in college has only limited value- in military terms, its strategic vision; what you need is tactical.
