Time flies! Our first grade reports went home today.

We're already at the midterm of the first 9 weeks grading period! In a way it doesn't seem like we've been in school that long. I gave all my kiddos a paper with their grade, their AR progress, and comments about how they're doing.

And since midterms are out. . . the questions are flooding in. . .

I know I turned in this paper. You must have lost it.
"Did you put your name on it?"
    Umm. . . I don't know.
"Did you get one back when I returned papers?"
    Umm. . . I don't remember.
"Did you get a missing assignment notice for it?"
    Ummmm. . . maybe.
"Did you turn it in late?"
Ummmmmm. . . . I might have given it to you yesterday.
Are you sure you're in my class?

"You can't give me a bad grade because you didn't give me my makeup work."
The missing assignment notices were posted and picked up.
"Yeah, but you didn't GIVE me the assignments. I didn't know what to do."
    Were you absent that day?
    "No."
Then why didn't you have your assignment?
    "I was goofing off."
    Well, at least he's honest.

    "Why don't I have a 100%?"
Well, it's really hard to get a perfect score on everything we do, especially when I'm trying to give you challenging work.
"But I've turned in everything we've done!"
    Sigh. . .

"Do I have to get this signed?"
    Yes.
    "But I'll be grounded!"
    And whose fault is that?

"By my mom teaches reading! I can't have an F in English!"
Yes, I know she does. That's why I want her to see your grade report.

I really felt better about my 6th grade class after comparing their grades for my class (LA II) to their regular language arts class grades. Most were very similar which lets me know that at least their squirrelliness at the end of the day isn't causing their grades to drop. The only grades that were lower were the special education kids, and they're all passing which is pretty good considering they really need one-on-one help with reading/writing and I can't do that with 31 kids.

I'm trying to keep the phone line tied up for awhile tonight so I don't have to field any calls at home. There are only three Hill families in town. . . us, the dentist, and his family. Not hard to find our number in the book.

    Ours go out Monday.

So far, only one converstion about grades:
Student [Interrupting the class discussion] : Will you tell me my grade?
    Me: Not right now.
    Student: Why not?
Me: Because we're talking about this now.
[Discussion goes on a while before this student interrupts again]
    Student: Is my grade okay?
Me: Well, have you been getting good grades?
    Student: Yes.
Me: Then I'd say probably yes.

Yea, sometimes I feel I'm wasting my money on an unlisted number, but other times it seems worth it ;-)

Because my husband is in the music business and gives lessons from our home, we have to keep our number listed. It's a pain sometimes!

    Not at progress reports yet

We're not there yet, but this morning I discovered that my daughter's school has a weblink to viewing all class grades online. I can see homework, quizzes, tests, attendance and what her grade would be if the report card went home that day. I have no idea how it works, but it's nice to not have to wait for the progress report and have her scramble to pull up a grade in the second half of the quarter.
Since her birthday is tomorrow I'm going to wait to tell her I know what she made on that "I don't have to study for it, it's an open notes test!" test, but come Sunday, we're going to work on taking proper notes that will help her actually pass the open notes tests.

    That sounds really neat, Rose!

Some of our kids get weekly grade checks, and that would save lots of paper and time to have it online.

All of our grades are kept on the system, so I'm thinking it could be put online for the general public. Maybe I'll ask about that!

Our grades are going online starting Monday. Unfortunately, we still have to send home the "official" progress reports since not everyone has a computer with internet access.

I am looking forward to it. I believe the students will be using it more than the parents to check up on their grades. It will greatly improve their personal accountablility for their schoolwork.
I've heard that four out of every three people have trouble with fractions.

I wish our kids' grades wouild be made available online. If we don't have the capability to do that, then we wasted a lot of money on our grading system a few years ago, IMNSHO :? Well, since everything's done on the computer now, parents are starting to by-pass the teachers and call administrators about their kids' grades
