DH and I are hoping for better luck this time on our vacation. We laugh that we always have some strange event or string of bad luck on our vacations . . . tropical storms, car alternators, broken teeth, slummy motels, etc.
This year we're heading to our old standby, Gatlinburg. Tonight we added a night in Cherokee, NC, just for old-time's sake. Neither of us had stayed in Cherokee since we were little kids. We booked a motel that we both remember . . . and has decent reviews, too. We started to stay at the casino, but they didn't have a room . . . and DH--the raised Baptist from a Pentecostal family--felt a little leary of staying in the casino anyway. Parents are all in stable health. Looks good to go.
One of the motels has wireless internet. Should I take the laptop?

I ended up not taking the laptop, but I did take my PDA . . . which also has internet access. However, I didn't end up using it since we were having fun doing stuff.
Here are a few photos. We stayed in Cherokee, North CArolina one night. I had visited there a few times, but I hadn't stayed there since I was very young. We ended up at the Wigwam Motel just because I remembered it from when I was little. DH voted for the Pink Motel because he remembered that one, but it was $5 higher a night, so we went with my choice.
It was a wonderfully well kept little room. You could tell the building was old, but you could also tell that they'd kept it up really well over the years.
On the way there we saw an elk on the side of the road in a field. I had to stop and get a photo. DH said it was a young one, but it looked HUGE to me.
We saw some people looking at a real bear, but I didn't pull over and try for a photo. We did see this one in the Village in Gatlinburg the next night.
We also had good luck with our motel in Gatlinburg . . . Jack Huff's Motor Lodge right off the main strip. We actually had a decent sized balcony and you could see more than the vent on top of the restaurant like we had last time we visited. Here's one of us on the balcony.
We also ate at really good restaurants, and we had a good time walking around looking in all the shops.
The only weird thing happened the first night in Gatlinburg. One of the street vendors got in a fight with some guy on the street, and I called the police. We ended up having to fill out a statement for them. Other than that things went pretty smoothly.
