    Weird Shakespeare

Today I'm off. I got a cup of coffee and sat down at the computer and turned on Cinemax. I normally wouldn't turn the TV on this early, but everyone else has already left.

Well, I heard Anthony Hopkins's voice and thought it was a bit stilted, but it got my attention. The play is Titus Andronicus. The play is of course the play, but it is set in modern times -- old castles with modern clothes (lots of leather) and cars and video games. That's what makes it seem so weird and frankly more like Mad Max with better dialogue.

I'm watching it anyway. I can't pass up Anthony Hopkins.

I hate to admit this, but I do not like Shakespere. (Yes, they even gave me my teaching degree despite that. ) How old is this movie?

I LOVE this version of Titus. It is only about 5 years old. It was directed by Julie Taymor (The movie Frieda, Lion King on Broadway) and is amazing. Traditionally this play is not touched b/c the violence is so extreme but Julie Taymor stylizes some of it and makes some it very viceral....plus her version of a timeless setting works perfectly in making the rather odd story believable.

I used to use this movie to turn kids on to Shakespeare. Then our county passed a resolution that we were not allowed to use any rated R movies under any circumstance....so I dont' use it anymore, but I recommned it to the kids. I would use it in conjunction with Medea--we would talk about the whole revenge thing.

I actually have to go an replace my copy of the movie b/c I loaned it to a student and they returned in minus one DVD!

    I hope you enjoyed it!
