When do schools typically hire new teachers?

I just graduated with my teaching degree last spring and was just wondering when schools typically hire teachers for the following school year. My application has been on file with the district since June, and I haven't heard from anyone yet. It's getting close to the beginning of school, and I was just wondering if there was still a chance that I would hear from a school before the year starts. When do schools usually hire new teachers? Any help would be appreciated.

Some start early, some late. At my first district I was hired in the spring. The present district I was hired 2 weeks before school started. How many places have you submitted your application? Do you send in anything else besides the app?

We don't hire until July. That's when the district gets the budget information for the next year. They also have a better idea of who is going to retire and who's going elsewhere.

However, we've also hired when school actually STARTED. One year they hired a teacher two weeks into the school year!

Our district hires pretty much ASAP, although there are some positions left right now.....I'd say the bulk has been done in the last month.

Over here you apply to the individual school. Most hiring is done a week or two before to a week or two after the classes start (in our case August 21th -September 10th)

My school hired early in June. From someone who has moved around alot, and went through the hiring process often I suggest you don't wait for the district, go right to a school if you can. I sent in an app to the district, but I also sent apps to ind schools and contacted principals directly. I always got an interview and a job. Good luck.

DOn't wait for them to come to you. Contact principals, and check back with personel on a regular basis. If you show you want a job they are more likely to look at you.

I see the rule of thumb as this: If you get hired early, you've had connections. If you get hired at the 11th hour, you are scooped up because no one wanted the position you are applying for and chances are pretty good it's for a fill-in for a teacher's leave of absence (in other words, a one year job), or some other temporary slot.

I take the cynic's view because around here, that's the way it is. I hope it's not the case where you are from.

Actually, my daughter was hired in April in a job which had a previous round of applicant interviews. She was the only one in her circle to have a job upon graduation. The high school was looking for certain qualities and abilities, and after a two-hour interview, the principal knew he had what he was looking for. You can make some generalizations, but it sometimes takes knowledge of the specific situation to know the truth.

Come on Banannas! Read my post! I said that's the way it is (and it IS) around here. I know other regions of the country are actually interested in the best person and actually interested in education, and I applaud them.

Be grateful you don't know about it like I do (and I hope you never have to see it). Nepotisim and cronyism rule around here. You can have all the witnesses to that you want.
