When to put an old dog down

Old floppy, lumpy bag of bones is still with us. Zacchaeus is over 18 now, and I have broached Mr. Bananas with the thought of putting him down. Hubby does not think the time is here yet. The dog still steals food as he can. He paced the floor for two hours straight after having his food, water, and outside privileges. Hubby finally said dog is out of Milk Bones and he will have to go to the store tomorrow to satisfy the dog.

Hi. Friend - when a dog reaches high age - a problem emerges : Do you keep the dog alive because you have the dogs best at heart or because of your needs?
I have had three dogs over the years - bird dogs - and the day the quality of life sank below a certain mark - (thats easy to see in a dogs eyes You know the embarrassing look??) - that was the day I had to start the process of getting prepared for the loss of a family member..
    Happy new year ,!!

When a dog is clearly not going to get better and is suffering, is it not wise to end his pain? They call it the humane society for a reason, and sometimes being humane means accepting the inevitable and ending the suffering.

Cool discussion. I was very sad to hear a comment by an old lady at my home(Grandma's friend). She said
that the old dogs must be shot. She can't bear such ugly souls with worst habits. I love dogs and I'm not
sure what will I do my and chew and chaw when they'll cross the age of 15.

Our family dog is getting on in years, and we have broached this subject as a family a few times before. She was my first "baby" and when the time comes to do the inevitable my heart will be broken. I don't want her to suffer though.

I hope that my pets just die naturally in their sleep from old age and I don't have to make those very difficult decisions. We actually need to take our dog to the vet now and I am hesitant because she has a few growths on her and I am afraid it is something really bad.
