    Worktorule's Post

Sorry all - I thought worktorule's post got deleted and I mistakenly (thanks to this ancient computer) ended up posting a response to the "New Teacher's Section." Sorry, sorry sorry!

Let me paste it here with the comments about me thinking worktorule being banned taken out.

Come on folks - I'm not here to be "worktorule's" apologist, but I found it
interesting despite disagreeing with much of it. Whomever he/she is writes well,
seems well-educated, and offers interesting debate fodder. What's so wrong with
that? Is this what we're coming to in America? Seems so - eliminate any dissenting
opinions, a la the Bush Administration playbook? I'm not intimidated by someone's
views like worktorules. I welcome something substantitive to talk about once and
    awhile (the historian in me).

On one count, the one thing I wanted to point out that I agreed with worktorule
on is the idea that the "Communist Threat" was great exaggerated in the United
States in the 50's. We studied that in grad school and it was interesting. It WAS a
threat to the United States, but it was greatly exaggerated. Stalin's Soviet Union
was a cluster from the start, and although it died a slower death than many
wished for, one can't operate a country like he did and expect it to thrive, much
less succeed. See President Eisenhower's farewell speech and the "Military
Industrial Complex" section - he knew what the "Red Scare" really was, a good
excuse to build up our military which made a lot of people very wealthy and
resulted in the fiasco known as Vietnam. I like to think America was and is strong
enough that our leaders don't have to use "scare tatics" into making us believe in
phantom enemies. We have enough real enemies as it is.

. Again, I'm not agreeing with worktorule, I just found the topic stimulating.

We are a small town. I like to get to know my neighbors before they start in on religion or politics. -- you know, small doses just to see how the wind is blowing.

If I were to go into the local coffee shop, I'd stroll in and say, "hey, how ya doing? I teach 8th graders. What do you teach? Whacha think about the last election?" Kind of ease my way into things.

Besides, I spend so much of my time here deleted posts that aren't from teachers -- rather they are from someone trying to sell us something -- that I may be more skeptical when I see posts from folks who haven't taken the time to have a cup of coffee first.

And just to be truly confessed here, I'm as bad as the kids. It's not that I don't want to think, it's just that my thought provoking brain is stretched rather thin under all my many hats.

And one more thing before study session starts -- I was raised in a union family. Strikes ain't all they're cracked up to be.

Yea, I hear 'ya Cousin Bit. Unions are NOT all they are cracked up to be. I've seen them protect not only incompetent people, but CRIMINAL behavior on the job. Mixed feelings there.

I just found worktorule's post interesting. Most took offense to it, and that's OK if they disagree in principle rather than just dismissing worktorule as a infiltrator from some crypto-facist organization.

Again, I'm not out to defend this person. In fact, if I get time (and by God, I finally found someone who's posts are longer than mine!), I'm going to go back and re-read them as well as the responses. Evidently worktorule has more time on his/her hands than I do (another shocking thing!). Hahahahahahahaha........

I'm fascinated with history, politics, economics (why I majored in these subjects). I admit I'm still a little baffled by worktorule's approach and intentions (hence, the re-read).

But what I did read - as I said before - I didn't agree with much, but I'm not offended. No big deal - I hardly am agreed with much myself!

    Let's see where it goes.

    C Stan,

Bitsy is pointing out that one takes small steps in introducing oneself to a group instead of coming on like gangbusters.

Also, we step beyond the point of calm discussion where points are discussed, and only one point of view is accepted. That stance loses credibility. I don't need insults to persuade me. That tactic is a turnoff.

Our experience as moderators has been that generally if someone comes here for the first time and posts something controversial immediately, he/she is not here as a teacher. Had this been posted by someone who had been here for a while as a contributing member of the forum, I would be less sceptical. Our purpose as moderators is to make certain this board remain a professional board and not a forum for propagating one's agenda.

Bitsy was simply pointing out that introducing oneself and becoming a member of the community first makes posts such as the one posted less questionable. Interesting, thought provking questions are definitely not discouraged.

PS: Hey Bitsy! Talking to yourself again?

I don't know that Bitsy is talking to herself. It is more like making that phone call, hanging up, then remembering that you forgot to include an important point. ops:

How do you know who IS and who IS NOT a teacher? Maybe I'm not a teacher! Maybe I'm a Wal-Mart Greeter who on the side is a closet commie working to rally support for Castro's presidental campaign here in the US. Hell, I could be ELVIS! Jimmy Hoffa! The Grassy Knoll gunman! Wahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!!!!!!!!!!!!
